Miami Herald Letter to the Editor: TPS for Haitians Now PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jordana Hart
Friday, 15 January 2010

The following Letter to the Editor was written by Jordana A. Hart, an attorney with our firm, and was published today in The Miami Herald. It reflects our firm's unwavering position that the U.S. government must immediately grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to undocumented Haitians in the United States:

"Perhaps Haiti's devastating earthquake will convince the United States to finally grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to undocumented Haitians in this country. It would allow them to work legally and send money home without fear of deportation.

"Haitians under TPS would join Salvadorans, Hondurans, Nicaraguans, Somalis and Sudanese being protected from environmental disaster and armed conflict in their countries. Some catastrophes date to 1999.

"The American Immigration Lawyers Association has again asked the Department of Homeland Security to designate Haitians for TPS. We'll have to wonder if we see DHS hesitate for even a second to grant it."

Despite hurricanes and other devastation over the years, Haitians have never been granted TPS.
